Frequently Asked Questions
What is BVCF’s mission?
The Boulder Veterans Charitable Foundation (BVCF) mission is to raise money to assist veterans in supporting their charitable projects. This allows veterans to continue serving with more financial leverage than they could generate individually.
Who runs the organization?
A Board of Directors runs the organization along with a team of officers (President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer) who execute the projects selected by the Directors.
What is a nonprofit corporation?
A nonprofit corporation is a corporation formed to carry out a charitable, educational, religious, literary, or scientific purpose. BVCF is a Colorado non-profit corporation. A nonprofit corporation doesn't pay federal or state income taxes on profits it makes from activities in which it engages to support its objectives. This is because the IRS and state tax agencies believe that the benefits the public derives from these organizations' activities entitle them to a special tax-exempt status.
Is BVCF a 501c3?
Yes. BVCF is a 501 C 3 corporation (EIN 88-0550528). BVCF is a public charity meaning it derives most of its funds from public donations as opposed to a private foundation which gets most of its money from a few major donors, typically endowments or corporations.
Where does the money go when I donate to your organization?
Your money is deposited in a bank account and tagged as associated with a project that you specify. If you don’t specify a specific project the money goes into the general fund and is used where most needed.
How can I partner with the BVCF?
Discuss your charitable project with the directors and see if there is a fit and interest in partnering on the project.
How can I get involved in the organization's mission?
Volunteer. We’ll figure out how you can be most effective. We are currently looking for officers to help run the organization and volunteers to assist in working on specific fundraising projects.
How do I know whether a nonprofit is registered and tax-exempt?
Nonprofit corporations are "registered" in the state where they are incorporated, and with the IRS, if they are, or were at one time, tax-exempt. In Colorado, you can search the Secretary of State’s non-profit database at: CO SOS Non-Profit . To learn whether a nonprofit organization is registered as a tax-exempt, use IRS Select Check.
What are the requirements for acknowledging charitable contributions?
It’s good practice to thank your donors for any size gift but, a formal, written gift acknowledgement is only required by law for contributions over $250 and quid pro quo contributions. Acknowledgements should include confirmation of the tax-exempt status of the nonprofit, a description of the item(s) donated, the date of receipt, and whether or not the nonprofit provided goods and services in exchange for the donation. Cash is difficult to account for and is usually anonymous.
Donors, however, expect a receipt for donations of any size so they can claim a tax deduction for charitable contributions.
What financial information is available about individual nonprofits?
Tax-exempt organizations that file annual reports with the IRS (referred to as the “IRS Form 990”) are required to share the three most recently filed IRS Form 990s upon request. Many nonprofits post them on their website.
